Tour di Via Italia – #295/365

Our family visit to Windsor coincided with the annual Tour di Via Italia cycling races on Windsor’s Erie Street in Lit’l Italy. Although many pro photographers took up their position just a little past the apex of the corner I found that the most dramatic shots were from a low angle right on the corner. It was a rather dangerous position with no barriers and bikes passing by within inches at about 30mph so I fired a lot of continuous bursts as the pack raced by. I was using my Zeikos battery grip and had a second (Zeikos) battery loaded as I’d read somewhere that it can speed up the frame rate. I also only shot in jpeg to get the best buffer rate.

But, this was apparently too much for my D80 and after about 5 lengthy bursts, I got the dreaded "Err" message displayed on the top LCD and the camera stopped functioning. I tried a number of different remedies, but nothing fixed the problem (to be continued).

Edison Business Phonograph (circa 1906)
cycling functions

The use of recording machines in offices was the first of Edison’s ten intended functions for his new invention.

This machine is an electric version powered by adjustable 220 or 110 V direct or alternate current. On the back is a sliding bar marked with different cycles and the plaques reads as follows:
"When pointer is set for correct electrical current, to weaken motor move slightly towards left, to strengthen it move towards right, for electrical conditions not marked, place pointer at proportional positions from points marked on scale".

The machine is fitted with a recorder and a reproducer to which the person using it would attach a recording or a hearing tube, instead of a horn, and either push the start or stop button located on the right.

Bunki is home
cycling functions

Bunki is back from the vet hospital after a two night stay. The diagnosis is hepatic lipidosis, and based on everything I think the vets are right on target. For those that don’t want to do the research, basically hepatic lipidosis means she didn’t eat enough for some reason and now her liver isn’t functioning right, so she doesn’t want to eat, but the only thing that will make her better is eating. A vicious cycle. The good news is that this is totally treatable and has about an 80% recovery rate. Everyone has commented on how well Bunki is looking and acting considering her state, so the prognosis is great. We just have to help her eat until her body is back in balance. In order to do this, she had a nasal-esophageal feeding tube put in place. Basically a tiny tube (a little larger than my piercing) going down her nostril and into her throat that is stitched in place to her nose and cheek to keep it in. In addition, she’s sporting one of those fashionable lamp shade collars to keep her from ripping it out. We are to feed her 4 times a day plus anti-nausea meds until she is back to eating normally, which could be weeks to months.

It’s kind of weird pumping food directly into your pet in order to help them. She doesn’t understand why we’re doing everything, but has been remarkably compliant and even pleasant and loving. It’s definitely a shift in my relationship with her as a pet. Especially after spending a good portion of the evening helping her get in and out of the litterbox without making a mess. In 5 years, Bunki has been by my side through 3 different states, 6 different apartments, 2 relationships, 4 feline roommates, a cross country roadtrip, and was a big help when I had to say goodbye to Gabby last fall. It’s comforting to know that there is a course of action that should bring her back around to the normal lovable cat she is.

Q&A: What are some good Colorado bike tour names?

Question by Lizzy N: What are some good Colorado bike tour names?
I need to make a bike tour for a school project and mine is in Colorado I don’t know what to call it.

Best answer:

Answer by jzn
Well it depends on the focus of your bike tour? Road or Mountain bike? Seeing how Colorado is know for the Rocky Mountains, you many want to incorporate that into it. Additionally, since the state from Denver going West is just about mile high or more above sea-level you may want to use that.

Ergo, Ride the Rockies, a Mile High.

Q&A: What was longest time spent wearing bike shorts with washing them out especially on a bike tour ?

Question by spandex: What was longest time spent wearing bike shorts with washing them out especially on a bike tour ?
Admit it people (Those that wear bike shorts) we hate taking off our shorts during a bike tour, race, or a cross county run right ? So what was your record time spent in shorts with chamois between your legs ? I ask this in another bike and was surprised that none took them off or are Still Wearing them years after their tour ended. What’s your record time or are you still wearing them ????

Answer by Henry L
6 weeks at a time then he washes them out dries them out and puts them back on again & again. He commutes to work, races, tours coast to coast in the same pair he bought 3 years ago.
They stink sometimes but because he wins races constantly I put up them.

BikeToursDirect Adds Mexico to Tour Roster, First North American Destination

BikeToursDirect Adds Mexico to Tour Roster, First North American Destination

Mexico’s diverse and breathtaking landscape attracts cycle tourists from around the world.

Chattanooga, TN (PRWEB) October 31, 2011

BikeToursDirect has expanded its tour offerings to its fifth continent, adding Mexico to its tour roster, its first North American destination. Following meetings last week at the Adventure Travel World Summit in Chiapas, Mexico, BikeToursDirect reached an agreement to represent EcoColors Tours, a Cancun-based tour operator.

“I’m very impressed with EcoColors’ professionalism and commitment to the environment and to local communities,” said BikeToursDirect president Jim Johnson. “Their focus is as much on ecosystems, history and culture as it is on recreation, and their guides are also biologists or naturalists.”

“We recognize our responsibility to the people and places we visit,” says EcoColors president Kenneth Johnson. “Our philosophy is ensuring that our clients’ holidays have a positive impact on the places they visit.”

Tours will be priced starting at about $ 1,500, including one week of lodging, dinners, professional guides, van support, transfers, sightseeing tours, admissions and other services. Partial proceeds from each tour go to local Mayan communities.

BikeToursDirect will offer four tours, which spotlight the archaeological history, biodiversity and natural wonders of Mexico:

Riviera Maya Bike Adventure, which takes cyclists across the Yucatan peninsula from the jungle to the Caribbean and explores Mayan archaeological sites and natural wonders hidden in Mexico’s second largest national park, the Sian ka’an Biosphere Reserve. Tour dates: January 7, March 18 and November 4.

Yucatan Bike Adventure, which winds along the Yucatan Peninsula and spotlights contemporary Mayan villages, ancient pyramids, archaeological sites and Mexico’s second largest national park, the Sian ka’an Biosphere Reserve. Tour dates: February 19, April 8 and October 7.

Oaxaca Bike Adventure, which winds through villages with colonial-era structures and explores archaeological and historic sites, including Monte Alban, Santo Domingo Church, El Tule tree and petrified waterfalls in the mountains. Tour date: September 2.

Chiapas Bike Adventure, a journey through the tropical rainforest of Chiapas, the most biodiverse state of Mexico, which features unique waterfalls, lagoons, canyons and mountains, as well as the amazing archaeological sites of the Olmec (first prehistoric culture) and the Maya: Palenque and Comalcalco. Tour dates: April 22 and September 23.

Each tour also features authentic Mexican cuisine and offers a variety of side excursions, including guided naturalist hikes, kayaking, boat tours and snorkeling on the world’s second longest coral reef—all geared at providing an opportunity to explore the unique and diverse ecosystems of Mexico.

“The primary mission of EcoColors is preservation: to protect and preserve the unique ecosystems in Mexico and combine this with ecotourism. Our goal is to amaze our travelers while giving them the opportunity to explore the ecosystems in an informed and safe manner,” says Kenneth Johnson.

The two Johnsons (no relation) met and spent time together during the annual Adventure Travel World Summit last week in Chiapas, Mexico. “Kenneth took me on a boat tour through the Sumidero Canyon, part of the Chiapas Bicycle Adventure,” says Jim Johnson, who shot a short video of the adventure. “I was impressed by his knowledge and passion for the region.”

Entering its ninth season, BikeToursDirect represents over 50 tour companies worldwide and offers more than 200 bicycle tours in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and North America. Unlike many companies, BikeToursDirect doesn’t operate tours but instead represents overseas companies that can keep their tour prices down due to the lower cost of doing business close to home and to spreading their expenses over a large client base. Clients book tours and make all payments through BikeToursDirect, usually at the same prices charged by the tour companies.

BikeToursDirect will add the Mexico tours to its new website in early December. Interested travelers can contact BikeToursDirect to be alerted when the new tours are online.

Where can I find an amazing road bike tour in Europe to go to?

Question by phinetic: Where can I find an amazing road bike tour in Europe to go to?
I have gotten somewhat serious about cycling and would absolutely love to go to Europe and do possibly a 7-14 day road bike tour with other individuals (this would be next year). I don’t want something leisure either, something that will test my endurance. I was wondering if anyone has ever don something like this, who they did it through, and how much it cost. Any sites or information on how you liked it would be awesome too.

I live in the states too so that’s why I’d like to book this in advance. Thanks!
