The Tour De France 2009 stage 20 results are finally in after one of the most fierce competitions seen so far. Juan Manuel Garate, also known as the Spanish Prodigy showed his masterful ability to conquer the hardest bike race in France today. Stage 20 is where the riders zip through the center of France, going through the arc and finally going up a grueling mountain for a spectacular finish.
Throughout the day speculations were cast as to who the winner would be. In fact a number of fraudulent news and blogger articles surfaced on the internet declaring the winner. However after a while, it became clear that the race was between the three giants of the sport. Juan, Andy Schleck and Lance Armstrong. They were unable to bridge the gigantic gap that Contador had managed to create in the previous rounds.
Historically, stage 20 is known as the hardest round in the Tour de France because of the ferocious climb up against 25kph headwinds. It is a true test of endurance, one that divided the leading riders into three groups with the frontrunners minutes ahead of the others.
Contador had to conserve his lead by covering any attacks by the six riders between four to six minutes behind him. Incredibly, he managed to sustain this throughout the race.
The race eventually boiled down to a series of failed attacks to get to the lead or to simply overwork him into submission. This was a showdown like no other.
