What is the best beginner mountain bike?

Question by remora: What is the best beginner mountain bike?
I am new into XC mountain biking. Main goal is to enjoy the great outdoor. Currently, using a loaned full susp Haro Extreme 6 and didn’t like it. Would like to get my own bike for less than 1k. Hope to get recommendation of specific model(hard tail). Prefer good frame with lower end components so that I can upgrade as my skill progresses.

well id go with a Gary fisher they make a great bike maybe try like a Gary fisher Tassajara its like 1k but its a great bike and i think it comes in a 27 speed so it gives room to update but the components are not as low as u may like them but the frame and fork is great. if this isn’t your bike than u could try a specialized. the Gary fisher website is Fisherbikes.com a even bike that may be more up your ally is the gray fisher marlin its got a 24 speed shimano deore rear derailleur and a rock shox dart 2 front fork its also a great bike with lower components so u can update it cost about 700

Is it okay to ride a mountain bike to school?

Question by : Is it okay to ride a mountain bike to school?
I’m a junior in high school, and I live a little under 4 miles from my school. I plan on riding a bike to school, but I have a huge mountain bike. My route to school isn’t that busy, so to say, but mountain bikes technically are meant to ride on mountains. Would it be safe or lawful to drive in around Boston, MA?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with riding a mountain bike on the street. It’s just like taking a SUV on the road. Lots of people do it. For short distances (under 10 miles) a mountain bike will do just fine.

That being said, a mountain bike requires alot more effort than a road bike. Mountain bikes can go 10-12 mph while a good road bike can go 30+ mph. If you want to buy a new bike, try a road bike. The knobby tires of a mountain bike are great for mountain biking trails, but not so great for roads. The skinnier road bike tires are smooth and much easier to go distances.

You could also compromise. Just put smooth tires on your mountain bike. That would only be ~40, instead of a new bike. Your mountain bike could then go 3-4 mph faster on the road than with the knobby tires. However, you’ll need to switch back to the knobby tires when you take your bike offroad.

i would get a mountain bike because theyre deffinaltey way better on side walk and you can have fun ridint in the woods ect, while road bikes dont have any shock absorbtion and have a rough ride unless your in the street, in the way of traffic…. dont konw what brands to check, look at local bike shops…

Full Suspension Mountain Bikes vs. Hardtail Mountain Bikes- FAQ

Full Suspension Mountain Bikes vs. Hardtail Mountain Bikes- FAQ

I have started to loose count of the number of times I’ve heard questions such as, “What type of mountain bike should I buy?” and “What is the difference between a full suspension mountain bike and a hardtail mountain bike?” One type of bike is not better than the other. The choice between the two should be made based on the riders’ personal riding preferences, budget and physical capabilities. The FAQ below was compiled in order to help you with this all-important choice.

Question: What are full suspension mountain bikes?
Answer: Also known as dual-suspension mountain bikes, these mountain bikes have shock absorbers installed in both the front and rear tires.

Question: What are hardtail mountain bikes?
Answer: Also known as front or single suspension mountain bikes, these mountain bikes have shock absorbers installed in the front tire only.

Question: Which type of mountain bike tends to be faster?
Answer: Hardtail mountain bikes tend to be faster and pedal easier in smooth terrain than full suspension mountain bikes because of the former’s light weight and stiff rear end.

Question: Which bike is better at handling obstacles and rough terrain?
Answer: Because of the shock absorbers in both the front and the rear, full suspension mountain bikes outperform hardtails in rough terrain. The suspension absorbs the impact of obstacles and allows for more traction to be transferred to the ground.

Question: Which bike is better at climbing hills?
Answer: Because of their light weight and easier handling, hardtail mountain bikes are better at climbing hills. However, full suspension mountain bikes do outperform hardtails on hills that are made up of rough terrain.

Question: Which bike is easier on the body?
Answer: Full suspension mountain bikesare more comfortable than their counterparts. It minimizes the stress on riders’ arms and backs caused by vibrations and jolts during long rides.

Question: Which is more affordable?
Answer: Hardtail bikes are usally more affordable than full suspension bikes of similar quality.

Now you are equipped with the information you need to make the right choice. Happy Trailing!
