Cross Country Skiing Provides a Fun Workout

Cross Country Skiing Provides a Fun Workout

Have you been using an elliptical machine and ever thought how they developed it?  One of the major influences on the designers of the first elliptical machines was the Nordic sport of cross country skiing.  The great element that the designers took from cross country skiing is the continuous non-impact movement of the skiers.  The first elliptical machines actually were just lower body, but after people wanted a complete full body workout they added the hand bars that act in the same way as a cross country ski pole.

A person that is looking for a good workout in the winter should consider getting off the elliptical machine and getting on a pair of cross country skis.  The sport isn’t as difficult to pick up as downhill skiing or snowboarding.  It also doesn’t cost as much as the other sports that rely on the hill and gravity to provide you with the momentum to go.  With cross country skiing all that is required are a pair of skis and a path to follow that is packed with snow.  Really cross country skiing is a fun way of going hiking in the winter time.  Sure you could get a pair of snow shoes, but gliding across the snow is much more efficient and rewarding.  There are many areas in the winter time that you can only get to with either cross country skis or snow shoes.  Yet, people don’t take advantage of these items to see wonderful landscapes and winter sites.

Cross country skiing is also a challenging workout, which like an elliptical machine, isn’t as strenuous as running or riding a bike.  During the summer a great way to prepare for cross country skiing is to use an elliptical machine, and to increase the amount of time you spend on building the muscles in your legs.  Powerful leg muscles will help to propel you across the snow in the winter.  In addition the less you weigh the easier it will be to move across the snow.

Adding protein to your diet is a great way to help your body to create new lean muscle.  Lean muscle is great for helping you to lose weight, and for you to get an edge when you are participating in sports like cross country skiing.  It takes a lot of calories for your body to create and to maintain lean muscle; which means that when you have lean muscle even when you are idle you are still burning fat.  Protein is the building block that your body uses to create lean muscle.

A person that is actively training should get at least half their body weight in grams of protein per day in their diet.  That is difficult to do with conventional forms of protein, like meat and eggs.  The best way to add protein is to use a whey protein supplement.  Whey protein is easy on your body’s system, and won’t cause any major negative side effects, like indigestion.  Whey protein is also easier for your body to metabolize and to use more efficiently.  Meaning that you are able to get better results compared with using soy based proteins.  When purchasing whey protein it is important to look for whey protein isolates.  Whey protein isolates contain 90% pure protein and don’t have the fats and carbohydrates that other supplements contain.

If you are sick of looking at the same thing every time that you get onto the elliptical machine, then it is time for you to find a pair of cross country skis and to see what winter has to offer.  It is a great workout, and you will find a hobby that will last the rest of your life.

Cool Bikes. Cool Riders: Chris riding cross country for Road2ACure on a 2010 Victory Vision. For additional ways to get involved, on the road and from home, see visit www.road2acure.org Transcript: Chris Calaprice: Hi. I’m Chris Calaprice with road2acure. I’m a 6 ½ year survivor of pancreatic cancer and a 6 year continuous chemotherapy patient. I’m riding my motorcycle 42000 miles this year to raise awareness for the disease. It’s a Victory Vision. It’s been generously donated by Victory to help our cause. They provide the bike, all the service, as well as all the great sponsors like ATRA, 858 Graphics, and Angel Print. They’re great folks and we couldn’t do it without them. My riding experience in the last year has been 13000 miles so far of my 45000 miles since February 23rd. Really, the reason we are out here doing this is pancreatic cancer is the number four killer among cancers. Yet it sees less than two percent of the federal funding so road2acure is really a motorcycle based PR campaign to raise the visibility for pancreatic cancer. Federal funding of 2 percent just doesn’t work; it’s got to be changed. As far as riding, this is a beautiful country. In the last 3 and a half months and 13000 miles, I’ve covered most of the south. I would say that favorite riding roads: West Virginia is really high on my list, Colorado, Arizona desert, and four corners region. I would really say Durango: the passes over Durango and out in monument valley are just stunning. So, if you

Cross country bike or an Sworks safire?

Question by Simone: Cross country bike or an Sworks safire?
I ride cross country for my team at school, but recently I have been leaning more towards the gnarly downhill trails. I want to get a new bike badly, and I am not sure what I should get. Hardtails are okay, but I think a full suspension safire from Specialized would be nice. However, I have no idea how much it would affect my cross country racing. Does anyone have any advice?

i have a saffire expert 2008 that i just bought for a great deal. I love this bike!! Its awesome!! I learned about my bike by trying out other high end bikes first at the bike shop. You can rent out a bike for a day and try them out. They have different high end bikes. I was glad i did this b/c the saffire expert did it for me. Its great for any kind of trail b/c of the full suspension that is adjustable. It also has alock out. You can have your full susupension completley locked out so that it feels like a hardtail but to be honest it always has some suspension. If you race on smooth or nontechnical terrain, a hard tail is probably faster. But if you like to race or ride on bumpy terrains or lots of rocks or roots, suspension is better. I noticed i can ride alot longer too b/c the bike takes most of the shock in my arms and back.

I have tried out many bike and the saffire i liked bc the handlebars are high up and it just fit me well. Once again, its all a matter of preference and fit.

im still learning how to use my suspension.

Workout plan for cross country bike ride?

Question by : Workout plan for cross country bike ride?
I’m possibly going to be going on a 950 mile, cross country bike ride. Since I’ve never done something of this nature before, I have no idea how best to train for it. I have 6 months to get in shape and the trip will be almost a month long. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do/who to ask about this? I’m a former college basketball player so I do have athletic training experience, just not in this particular field. Any help would be greatly appreicated!

Answer by intrepidfae
Google “How to train for a century” and get a training plan. There are many to choose from. Most of them have you start at some base mileage per week and increase it by about 10% per week. About half the mileage is in one long ride on Saturday. Typically, there is one off day per week. These plans are about 8 – 10 weeks. Start there. After you complete the plan you can either continue to ramp up the distance or push harder to complete 100 miles in consistently lower times. In either case, riding long distances and building your endurance is what you want to do.

Cross Country Mountain Biking

Cross Country Mountain Biking

Cross country mountain biking is cross country at its finest. Where free riders and downhill bikers use four wheel bikes and ski lifts to get them to their destination, cross country bikers get to the top of the mountain by the ride.

Though free riding is very popular, the life vein of the sport has always been cross country biking. Just as cross country riders are a different breed, the bikes they ride are as well. The cross country bike is completely different in many ways from other types of mountain riding bikes. The premise for cross country riders is speed. Everything about their bikes revolve with the idea of making the bikes faster and faster. Bikes used in cross country mountain biking can be fully rigid frame, hardtails, or even full suspension frames.

Through the years, the cross over to full suspension has become very popular. The weight difference between free ride bikes and cross country bikes are considerable. You’ll be extremely hard pressed to find a bike that weighs more than 24 pounds, and even that weight can be heavy. Free ride bkes weigh close to 40 pounds, which makes the difference in weight pretty close.

If you’ve never tried cross country mountain biking, you’ll probably find it to be a break from the ordinary. Even though this type of biking involves trails, it’s normally the type of terrain that beginners wouldn’t want to ride. Involving hills and rough terrain, cross country biking offers quite the rush.

For mountain bikers everywhere, cross country is the way to go. It offers you a new assortment of bikes, new areas to bike, and a new twist to mountain biking as you know it.

If you’ve been looking for a mountain biking rush, cross country mountain biking is what you need to be experiencing.
