Lancaster, PA (PRWEB) January 25, 2012

The Franklin and Marshall College Elite Cycling team is hosting its first 24 hour indoor Cycle-A-Thon this weekend to raise money for “Racing to Register” (http://www.racingtoregister.org) — the Pennsylvania non-profit founded to inspire people to join the Be The Match Registry (formerly National Bone Marrow Donor Registry.)

The students will begin cycling this Friday, January 27th at 4:00 p.m. and continue through Saturday, January 28th at 4:00 p.m. in the Steinman College Center. Members of the cycling team are raising money through pledges and will take turns riding their racing bikes on indoor stationary trainers as a continual relay for 24 hours.

Racing to Register was founded in 2011 by F&M alum Tom Kramer. Tom’s wife Pam was diagnosed in 2009 with a rare form of Leukemia and needs a bone marrow donor. Using endurance sports as a platform, Tom (F&M Class of 1989) undertook the mission of completing a marathon, two half Ironman triathlons and one full Ironman race in one year to inspire others to join the Registry. Today, RTR is a Pennsylvania non-profit corporation which has registered over 1,300 people and has facilitated two potential patient matches for patients.

“The cycling team has a long standing relationship with Racing to Register and its founder Tom Kramer,” notes F&M Team President Robert Burnett. “Tom is an active triathlete, cyclist and supporter of our team. He has educated all of us on the importance of joint the registry, and giving back to the community. We are thrilled to be holding this cycle-a-thon which will become an annual event.”

Tom Kramer, founder of Racing to Register adds “we are thrilled that the F&M team has decided to support us in this way. Young people age 18-25 joining the registry is a critical base of potential donors, so this is a very important demographic for us to reach. We encourage everyone to come out support the cycling team and, most importantly, join the Be The Match Registry.”

Currently there are only 10,000 people on the national registry; RTR has registered approximately 2,000 people since 2009.

About Racing to Register

Racing to Register inspires people to join the national bone marrow registry, using endurance sports as a platform. RTR also operates two programs, TEAM RTR which allows anyone to participate in select endurance events including marathons and triathlon, while raising funds and awareness as well as RTR Cares which was formed in partnership with the Ronald McDonald House in order to grant wishes to families or children being treated for blood cancer diseases and preparing or recovering from marrow or cord blood transplants.

About the Franklin and Marshall College Cycling Team

In 2008, the team was born and consisted of a small roster enthusiastic about bike racing. They had a successful two seasons, and were growing to be a strong group. Last year, the team was acknowledged as a small but extremely powerful team that “should be watched” as a potential top team in the Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference. At one point, they were crawling up as a top 5 team, “a goal”, said by many on the team, “that surpassed their expectations.” The F&M Cycling Team finished 9th out of the 53 or so teams in the ECCC. Currently they are training for their upcoming season with a roster that has nearly doubled in size. “We’re ready,” says Ryan McKenna, a teammate entering his second season with the team. “We’re a threat now to any top 5 team and that’s something we’re going to take seriously this season.”

World’s best announced for the UCI Track Cycling World Cup presented by Samsung

(PRWEB) January 31, 2012

Olympic Gold medallists Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton will head up a world class field for the UCI Track Cycling World Cup presented by Samsung, taking place from 16-19 February 2012 at the Velodrome in the Olympic Park which doubles up as a London 2012 test event.

Today the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) revealed the full line up which will include five Olympic Champions and 16 World Champions including current Sprint World Champions Jason Kenny (Great Britain) and Anna Meares (Australia) and Robert Forstemann (Germany) who is currently ranked World Cup number one in Sprint and Team Sprint.

With riders eager to compete in the London 2012 venue, the event has attracted the world’s best track cyclists, as many nations compete for Olympic qualification. Over 23,000 spectators will enjoy the elite action as athletes ride competitively for the first time in the Velodrome.

340 riders from 48 nations and 18 trade teams will compete in the four day competition. Highlights include finals of the Men’s and Women’s Team Sprint on Friday, the ever exciting Team Pursuit and the tactical Keirin races.

LOCOG Director of Sport Debbie Jevans said of the event: “The standard of riders we have attracted is phenomenal with most of the world’s best riders participating. The athletes will be competing for the first time in the Olympic venue in front of thousands of fans so we are looking forward to an exceptional event. As well as it being a vital competition for the athletes, it is key for LOCOG in terms of our testing to ensure that we are ready at Games time. We will be testing the overall venue operations, the track, the timing and results and our workforce.”

Tickets for the event sold out within minutes when they went on sale last November. LOCOG is making every effort to offer additional tickets to the event, and, if extra tickets can be made available, more information on this will be issued in the next few days on the UCI Track Cycling World Cup presented by Samsung website

The iconic 6,000 seat Velodrome will host Olympic and Paralympic indoor track cycling events on the 250 metre track during the Games. After the Games the Velodrome will form part of a facility which will include a BMX Track, one-mile long road cycle circuit, 6km of off-road mountain bike tracks and storage for over 300 bikes.

The UCI Track Cycling World Cup presented by Samsung is supported by UK Sport’s World Class Events Programme. The schedule and full lists of teams and riders can be viewed on the UCI Track Cycling World Cup presented by Samsung rider list.

According to Montrose Association of Commerce and Tourism’s Interim Executive Director, Jenni Sopsic, specialty items, like those made in Montrose, make outstanding gifts.

“Many of our local businesses sell handmade, local and often organic items,” says Sopsic. “Whether you are looking for a gift for the kitchen connoisseur, a green-thumb gardener, the spa-goer or the foodie in your family, Montrose merchants have something to suit every taste,” Sopsic adds. “Many of these businesses are family-owned-and-operated, and most have unique stories that add to the exceptional nature of a gift from Montrose.”

Here is just a sampling of gifts available for purchase from Montrose-area businesses, either in person or online.

Dayspring Farm (heritage meats, specialty food products, aromatics)

The owners of Dayspring Farm, located in neighboring Olathe, have been in the livestock business for more than 30 years. The farm utilizes natural and non-certified organic means to produce healthy animals. From grass-fed beef to pigs raised on cracked corn soaked in milk and plenty of room to roam, to free-range chickens and eggs, Dayspring Farm offers a number of farm-raised gift ideas. In addition the farm sells lavender bundles and essential oils. Call 970-323-0204 to purchase.

Hartman Gardens (preserves, syrups, dry mixes, gift packs)

Hartman Gardens is a small, family-owned garden and orchard near Montrose. Here, fresh preserves are made in the canning kitchen the old-fashioned way—with love and price one small batch at a time. Harman Gardens uses reduced-sugar recipes and adds no artificial colorings or preservatives so the natural fruit flavor shines through. All of the jams, jellies, conserves and syrups are made from fruit picked onsite or at neighboring farms. Dry mixes and gift packs are also available. Gifts start at just $ 1.25. Order online or call 970-249-3120.

MIM-by-Kim (goat milk soap)

MIM (Made in Montrose)-by-Kim specializes in handcrafted goat milk soap. Goat milk contains alpha-hydroxy acids, which help neutralize free radicals and reverse the aging process. The soap bars lather well, have a silky feeling, and leave no residue. They are excellent to use on problem skin such as eczema, psoriasis and dry skin. MIM-by-Kim soaps come in a number of fragrances, as well as unscented. Order online.

Rocking W Cheese

Rocking W Cheese in Olathe is the only artisan cheese producer on Colorado’s western slope. The cheese is ‘farmstead artisan,’ meaning the milk from which the cheese is made comes from cows at the dairy and is processed within 24 hours of milking. The Webbs, a six-generation Colorado family, operates the dairy, farm and cheese factory. They even grow all of the feed for the dairy cows. Rocking W Cheese offers a large selection of classic cheeses, Jack cheese and cheese curds, as well as cheese gift baskets. Visit the website for ordering instructions or call 970-323-5994.

Straw Hat Farms (garlic varieties for growing and plating, garlic powder/granules, baked goods)

Straw Hat Farms grows a wide variety of certified organic vegetables and an acre of certified organic garlic, which produces more than 70,000 bulbs. The farm provides high-quality, gourmet garlic for eating or planting. Online shoppers may purchase hardneck garlic varieties, which are difficult to find in grocery stores but offer a robust flavor, as well as more typical softneck varieties. Additionally, Straw Hat sells organic garlic granules and garlic powder, as well as homemade breads, pies, granola and other baked items. Fido is even taken care of at Straw Hat with two varieties of dog biscuits, made with care by the youngest members of the Straw Hat family. Order online or by calling 970-240-6163.

Wineries (shipping is restricted to certain states, contact each winery for details)

Cottonwood Cellars & The Olathe Winery

Set atop California Mesa, this 52-acre family-owned-and-operated farm and winery offers panoramic views of the San Juan Mountains and the Grand Mesa. The emphasis here is on quality, not quantity. Most wines are $ 17/bottle, and varietals include cabernet sauvignon, merlot, chardonnay, lemberger, syrah, pinot noir, Gewurztraminer, white pinot and a blend. Call 970-323-6224 to order.

Mountain View Winery

This fourth-generation orchard and vineyard has been producing wine and fresh fruits for more than 45 years. As a small, locally owned and family winery, Mountain View takes great care in the process, from growing, tending, pruning and taking care of the grapes to selecting and engaging in the meticulous process of hand-making the wines. Varietals include more traditional wines such as cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay, as well as unique wines such as cherry, apple raspberry and wild plum. You can even create your own label (or have the winery do it for you) for a very special touch.

About Montrose

Montrose is a uniquely-authentic town that has carved out a place for itself in the landscape and culture of Colorado. Montrose is the gateway to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, whose North Vista Trail was recently named a “Top 10 Canyon Hike in the U.S. Parks” by National Geographic.
