Question by Tqoq: Where can I find info about the Tour de France?
I love watching the Tour de France. But I don’t quite understand all about the jerseys, I want to know what time of day they actually begin the stages, where the riders stay, who determines the course each year, etc. I don’t even understand the little graph that appears on the screen periodically (US coverage). Is there a website where I can find the answers to my questions? I can’t find it on my own. I guess I need the Dummies’ Guide to the Tour! Thanks.

Wikipedia, as ever, is a good place to start as it has a lot of information on how the Tour works and its history. Bookshops and libraries are also good, as there’s a great deal of literature about the Tour – I especially recommend Tim Moore’s French Revolutions (http://www.amazon.co.uk/French-Revolutions-Cycling-Tour-France/dp/0099433826), in which the author cycles the route of the Tour and includes all sorts of interesting facts, figures and phenomena in a funny and easy-to-read way.
Quick answer re. the jerseys: the yellow jersey, or le maillot jaune, is worn by the overall leader, ie, the rider who has achieved the fastest time over all stages in the tour at any one time (classification leader). The green jersey is worn by the rider who has amassed the most points during sprints. The polka dot jersey is awarded to the King of the Mountains, the rider who has been given the most points for climbing. As the Tour takes in a number of very difficult climbs (such as the Col du Tourmalet, which they’ll climb twice in 2010), this is considered the most prestigious award in cycling by many riders and fans. The white jersey is given to the best young rider.
There are also other awards, including the Prix d la Combativite which is awarded to the rider judged to have been the most combative in each stage. Another award is the Lanterne Rouge, the last rider to finish the Tour, in which case that rider may carry a small red light under his saddle. Despite being in last place, this status is actually highly respected in cycling (simply finishing a race as harsh as le Tour is a definite achievement, no matter where one is placed) and the rider is likely to be approached with lucrative sponsorship deals.

The First Annual L’Avant Tour: A One-Day Alpine Cycling Event for All…
Gaillard, France (PRWEB) July 5, 2010
2010 marks the first of many years for the one-day cycle touring event in the French Alps called l’Avant Tour. This cycling event will occur on July 12th and will take cyclists from Albertvílle to St-Jean-de-Mauríenne. The concept is simple. Any cyclist over the age of 15 is welcome to register for this non-competitive cycling event and will ride the last 80 kilometers of the first big alpine stage of the 2010 Tour de France (Stage 9- June 13, 2010). That’s right- you now have the opportunity to go cycling on the very same roads that the pros will race the next day!
Each year in July, the Tour de France has brought both old and new cycling enthusiasts together to witness, hands-down, the most physically challenging sporting event in the world. Thousands of people from around the world travel throughout France to line the streets and watch their favorite athletes, however, the Alps mountain stages unquestionably draw the largest and most devoted crowds. For over a century, the beauty of the alps landscape and the raw, physical battle between man, mountain and machine have provided a captivating combination all to enjoy. It is for this reason that the organizers of the l’Avant Tour have decided to create an event that will allow all physically capable cycling enthusiasts to take their passion for cycling and the Tour de France to a more interactive level… to actually be able to cycle one of the same routes in the Alps as the pros.
Entry cost to sign up for the event before the 5th of July is only 5 euros and the cost for sign-up on race day will be 8 euros. The l’Avant Tour is a non-competitive cycling event in the Alps, meaning it is not timed, there are no assigned handlebar numbers, and a finishing order is not established. The start of the race will be between 7 and 9 am on July 12th, 2010 in the town hall courtyard of Albertvílle. Cyclists will cover a total of 87 kilometers and will ascend the classic Col de la Madeleine (1,993 meters) before reaching the tour’s destination city of St-Jean-de-Mauríenne. After the race, cyclists will enjoy a pasta party, Tour de France souvenir, and a drawing of large prizes including a one-week holiday at Saint-Francois-Longchamp and tickets to the VIP tribute at the finish of the 9th Tour de France stage.
If you have planned to view the 2010 Tour de France in person, we highly suggest you register for the l’Avant Tour event. Cyclomundo (http://www.cyclomundo.com), a cycle touring company based in the French Alps, will be organizing tour packages for the 2011 l’Avant Tour which will include accommodations, transportation and entry to the event and bike rentals (if needed). So, if you haven’t made plans to experience the 2010 Tour de France this summer, keep in mind you’ll be able to book a cycling tour package to participate in part of the first mountain stage of next year’s tour!

Festina Watches: Timekeeper of the Tour De France
Who keeps the official time for the world-famous Tour de France bicycle race? None other than Festina, a watch manufacturer established in Switzerland in 1902. The company has been a major sponsor and the official timekeeper of the Tour de France since 1993. From 1989 to 2001, it also sponsored its own cycling team, Team Festina. In addition to the Tour de France, the company is also the official timekeeper for the Tour de Suisse and the Tour de Romandie. As official sponsors and official timekeepers, you’d expect accuracy, but there’s more to Festina watches than just the ability to keep precise time.
From the start, the Festina name has stood for quality and classic style. Festina has always used only the highest quality materials, and the company has dedicated itself to creating elegant, precise timepieces-timepieces created for those who live life to its fullest.
Since the 1980s, their watches feature top quality Japanese quartz movements, including the Mecaquartz no-battery mechanical quartz movements. The company embraces its heritage as the sportsman’s watch, offering a full line of chronographs that offer precise movements, built-in tachometer, 1/20th of a second accuracy and an easy-to-use analog alarm.
Festina watches’ flagship line is the Tour De France collection, a line of durable, fashionable racing watches in both men’s and ladies styles. The mid-range collection is among the most popular lines of watches sold in Europe, outselling nearly every other manufacturer. The Tour collection features stainless steel cases and durable construction that stands up to the kind of punishment bicyclists and other sportsmen dish out.
In 2010, the company updated its popular Tour de France line and introduced the refreshed style as the Chrono Bike 2010 collection. The Chrono Bike 2010 collection is sportier and more streamlined with features drawn from the best of the best elements of racing bike construction. Available with steel or rubber bracelet, the Chrono Bike collection features striking faceplate colors, including turquoise, orange, lime green and bright blue.
The company’s other popular lines include the Road Warrior collection, a rugged men’s collection that features stainless steel cases and either steel, leather or rubber straps. Like most other Festina watches, the Road Warrior is water resistant and includes a tachometer, three sub-dials and an illuminated dial.
Festina’s latest and most elegant collection yet, is the Ceramic collection, which incorporates the elegance of ceramic into its design. The stunning collection includes round and rectangular faces, with a variety of bracelet and numbering styles. Elegant and ultramodern, the Ceramic Festina collection stands out among other watches, not only at its price point but among collections well above its own class.
Festina watches are sold throughout Europe, where they are the fastest growing lines of watches on the Continent. Whether you wear a watch, un horologe, uno orologi or un montre, Festina makes a watch that will suit your personal style to a tee. For more information about watches, contact an authorized Festina dealer.
