Franklin and Marshall College Cycling Team Hosting 24-Hour Cycle-A-Thon for “Racing To Register”

Lancaster, PA (PRWEB) January 25, 2012

The Franklin and Marshall College Elite Cycling team is hosting its first 24 hour indoor Cycle-A-Thon this weekend to raise money for “Racing to Register” (http://www.racingtoregister.org) — the Pennsylvania non-profit founded to inspire people to join the Be The Match Registry (formerly National Bone Marrow Donor Registry.)

The students will begin cycling this Friday, January 27th at 4:00 p.m. and continue through Saturday, January 28th at 4:00 p.m. in the Steinman College Center. Members of the cycling team are raising money through pledges and will take turns riding their racing bikes on indoor stationary trainers as a continual relay for 24 hours.

Racing to Register was founded in 2011 by F&M alum Tom Kramer. Tom’s wife Pam was diagnosed in 2009 with a rare form of Leukemia and needs a bone marrow donor. Using endurance sports as a platform, Tom (F&M Class of 1989) undertook the mission of completing a marathon, two half Ironman triathlons and one full Ironman race in one year to inspire others to join the Registry. Today, RTR is a Pennsylvania non-profit corporation which has registered over 1,300 people and has facilitated two potential patient matches for patients.

“The cycling team has a long standing relationship with Racing to Register and its founder Tom Kramer,” notes F&M Team President Robert Burnett. “Tom is an active triathlete, cyclist and supporter of our team. He has educated all of us on the importance of joint the registry, and giving back to the community. We are thrilled to be holding this cycle-a-thon which will become an annual event.”

Tom Kramer, founder of Racing to Register adds “we are thrilled that the F&M team has decided to support us in this way. Young people age 18-25 joining the registry is a critical base of potential donors, so this is a very important demographic for us to reach. We encourage everyone to come out support the cycling team and, most importantly, join the Be The Match Registry.”

Currently there are only 10,000 people on the national registry; RTR has registered approximately 2,000 people since 2009.

About Racing to Register

Racing to Register inspires people to join the national bone marrow registry, using endurance sports as a platform. RTR also operates two programs, TEAM RTR which allows anyone to participate in select endurance events including marathons and triathlon, while raising funds and awareness as well as RTR Cares which was formed in partnership with the Ronald McDonald House in order to grant wishes to families or children being treated for blood cancer diseases and preparing or recovering from marrow or cord blood transplants.

About the Franklin and Marshall College Cycling Team

In 2008, the team was born and consisted of a small roster enthusiastic about bike racing. They had a successful two seasons, and were growing to be a strong group. Last year, the team was acknowledged as a small but extremely powerful team that “should be watched” as a potential top team in the Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference. At one point, they were crawling up as a top 5 team, “a goal”, said by many on the team, “that surpassed their expectations.” The F&M Cycling Team finished 9th out of the 53 or so teams in the ECCC. Currently they are training for their upcoming season with a roster that has nearly doubled in size. “We’re ready,” says Ryan McKenna, a teammate entering his second season with the team. “We’re a threat now to any top 5 team and that’s something we’re going to take seriously this season.”

Garmin Vector Offers Cyclists the First Ever Power Pedals with Left/Right Balance

Garmin Vector Offers Cyclists the First Ever Power Pedals with Left/Right Balance

Garmin Vector Power Pedals To Optimize Cycling Performance

Bozeman, MT (PRWEB) January 09, 2012

The Garmin Vector power pedals offer cyclists a completely unique and new technology and were identified as the best new technology for 2011 from the Cycling News Reader’s Poll together with one caveat; they will not be available until March of 2012. When they arrive they will revolutionize how power output is measured for cyclists according to the Heart Rate Watch Company.

The real story is the unique left/right power balance that tells cyclists if leg power is equalized or out of balance as well as where the power is in the pedal stroke. None of the current power systems on the market today offer this feature.

“Measuring applied force at the pedal makes complete sense because this is where it is applied,” says Rusty Squire, President of the Heart Rate Watch Company. He continues, “The ability to use left/right power to help strengthen, and equalize, the non-dominant leg is the key to making big gains in power.”

The first units will hit the market in March of 2012 and these power pedals use a strain gauge in the spindle to calculate power. They can additionally determine things like left/right power balance. Another unique feature is the fact that these pedals require no further calibration once they are installed.

Many observers have expressed fears with respect to the pedal pod, that also is the battery which powers the device, as being susceptible to breakage. As reported by Garmin, this is not something to worry about as they have yet to break a pod even when the pedal body hits the street.

FIRMWARE UPDATES

Garmin has developed a firmware upgrade for the Edge 800 as well as the Edge 500 that will allow the units to understand the left/right power balance. All units need to be upgraded to the newest firmware to receive this watts metric.

Garmin is going to ship the USB data sticks together with the Garmin Vector so that anyone can complete any firmware updates as firmware is updated and improved by Garmin’s engineers.

TRAINING PEAKS METRICS

The revolutionary Garmin Vector pedals are going to display a number of Training Peaks power metrics such as normalized power, training stress score and intensity factor.

ADJUSTMENTS TO CALIBRATION

Most watts devices today are employing foil strain gauges whereas the Vector utilizes silicon strain gauges mounted in glass on stainless steel which has meant that additional calibration is not required when these pedals are installed.

ENDORSED HEAD UNITS

Garmin promises to support integration with the Garmin Edge 800, Edge 500 and Edge 705. Vector pedals are additionally useable by owners of the Garmin Forerunner 310XT along with the new Garmin 910XT triathlon GPS watches, which create a superb alternative for triathlon contenders.

Nearly all professional cyclists and quite a few amateurs train using watts-based metrics to help improve their bike riding. Now armed with data on left and right power balance the cyclist can observe precisely where the power is in the pedal stroke which is not observable using previously developed systems.

Needless to say, Garmin Vector power pedals will revolutionize how cyclists train thanks to left/right power balance.

Gentle Giant Pedals Its New Bicycle Service

Gentle Giant Pedals Its New Bicycle Service

Somerville, MA (PRWEB) January 04, 2012

Environment and price-conscious residents on the move in Boston have embraced moving industry leader Gentle Giant Moving Company’s ground-breaking new service; moves conducted using only specialized pedal-powered bicycles. The award winning moving company rolled out this innovative service which will allow Boston residents relocating within the city to move stress free without the use of large, diesel consuming trucks that require buying expensive, city-issued parking permits. By eliminating trucks from the moving equation, customers can still enjoy the same high quality, efficient move conducted by the courteous professionals at Gentle Giant, but at a lower financial and environmental cost.

The bicycles and trailers used by Gentle Giant’s Bike Moves service are specialized for hauling heavy goods. The custom built trailers are made of aluminum and are capable of carrying 300 pounds. The Bike Moves service currently serves customers moving within the Boston metro area that seek a low-cost, high-quality, professional, and environmentally-friendly option. Students moving items into or out of storage, single apartment dwellers, and businesses needing local deliveries are a few examples of ideal customers for the Bike Moves service. It is a year-round service, and Bike Moves service takes every precaution with regard to the safe and timely transport of goods as Gentle Giant does with its truck moves.

Gentle Giant’s Bike Moves service began when a local cycling enthusiast started helping people move furniture and boxes around town with his bicycle tractor-trailer rig to earn some extra cash. After some initial success, the entrepreneurial cyclist decided to bring the idea to a company that he felt had the resources and progressive culture needed to make bicycle-based moving a large scale reality: 31 year old, Boston-based Gentle Giant Moving Company. The clean, frugal service was outlined to Gentle Giant Founder and CEO Larry O’Toole, who loved the idea. “This initiative was a perfect fit for Gentle Giant,” O’Toole explained. “Our local customers now have an environmentally friendly option which fits in perfectly with Gentle Giant’s athletics and fitness focused company culture.”

Customers choosing the Bike Moves service will get a minimum crew of two Giants with one or two bicycle rigs, with the option of a third rig and additional Giants if needed. If a customer is unsure whether Bike Moves service is the right choice for them, Gentle Giant will do an on-site visit with the customer to help decide. Those interested in the service can call Gentle Giant at 1-800-GIANT-MEN and inquire with the sales team.

Where can I find cycling/bike shorts in colors other than black?

Cycling Bikes
by Dave Haygarth

Question by California Dreamin’: Where can I find cycling/bike shorts in colors other than black?
I have spandex cycling shorts in black, and one in blue… but can never find them in other colors. I’d like some in red, orange, yellow, white, etc… and others with various designs and patterns. The stores I go to only sell black, black, and more black. Even Pearl Izumi’s website only sells black cycling shorts.

But where can I find cycling shorts in a variety of colors — either stores or websites?
