Nutty Putty Cyclers Cross Country Bike Trip for Charity

www.nuttyputtycyclers.com Learn more about our story. We are riding our bikes across the country to support a noble cause

Andy Williams, Grand Targhee’s Special Events/ Summer Trails and long time snow biker, was pivotal in paving the way for Grand Targhee to encourage snow biking on the Nordic trails. “After enjoying the mountain bike trails in Rick’s Basin during the summer, I couldn’t help but think that the winter riding would be amazing,” said Williams, “Snow biking provides another opportunity for guests to enjoy nature in the Tetons,” Dave Byers, a local snow bike race organizer and cyclist agrees and recently blogged “I applaud Grand Targhee Resort for their forward thinking and willingness to try something new. As long as snow bikers follow the rules and respect the trails when conditions are soft, I feel as if snow bikers and the Nordic skiers can coexist peacefully on the trails.” The snow bike was created to go where standard “all terrain” bikes flounder. The floatation and traction afforded by large-volume, low-pressure tires can get you over and through otherwise unrideable terrain…sand, mud, wet rocks and roots, ice and many kinds of snow. The snow bike is purpose built for snow and sand with wide, high flotation tires that enable travel on a variety of low pressure surfaces. Huge tires make for a comfy ride and distribute weight for FLOAT and TRACTION IN THE SNOW.

what is a good cross country mountain bike for racing?

Question by laurasza: what is a good cross country mountain bike for racing?
i want to find a good cross country racing bike. i’m going to start racing soon and need a light bike.

Best answer:

Answer by curious dad
start by going to a bike shop, look around, ask questions, I am a road cyclist.. gotta pick the bike that is right for you and how you ride… there are carbon fiber, very light.. but brittle… aluminum.. light ..titanium, light as aluminum but stronger, .. and steel frames.. there are many brands, many styles.. you need to match the style of bike to what you intend to ride.. off road bikes… gary fisher bikes look pretty good, might even look into a custom made bike also, pricey though. gotta match what you can afford to what you want, might look at a few cycling magazines too.

Bike Tribes: A Field Guide to North American Cyclists

A hilarious and essential illustrated field guide that breaks down the tribes of the bicycling community: from the spandex-clad weekend warriors to the hipsters on street bikes who love to laugh at each other (and themselves) Anyone who rides a bike knows the bicycling world is made up of tribes. From tattooed messengers to pretty urban hipsters to grouchy shop owners, they may look like they live on different planets, but they are united by their abiding love of bikes—and often their total disdain of other members of this insular world. Bike Tribes is the Preppy Handbook of bicycling, replete with one-of-a-kind illustrations that taxonomize the special habits, clothing, preferences, and predilections of cyclists. Chicago Entrepreneur Vivian Valtas Schmidt Donates 15 Bikes to Area Children

Vivian Valtas Schmidt and students of Mark Twain Elementary School Chicago, IL

CHICAGO, IL (PRWEB) February 07, 2012

While children around the world were writing letters to Santa, expressing their Christmas wishes, a group of Chicago schoolchildren sent a special plea to Vivian Valtas Schmidt, entrepreneur and author of Stiletto 911.

For the second year in a row, Valtas Schmidt sponsored the “12 Days of Christmas Bicycle Essay Contest”. She sent a letter to Chicago Public Schools administrators, letting them know that she wanted to donate 12 bikes to students in need. She asked that teachers share her offer with the youngsters and asked that they write an essay explaining why they wanted a bike.

Shortly before Christmas, she made this dream come true for 15—not just 12—Chicago children.

“There were so many heartfelt letters that I couldn’t limit the bikes to 12,” explains Valtas Schmidt, owner of the Vivian Valtas State Farm Agency in Chicago and author of the recently published self-help/novel,“Stiletto 911: The Makeover Manifesto”. She is also active with the Valentine Boys and Girls Club in Chicago.

One 8 year-old wrote on behalf of his 15 year-old brother. The teen’s bike had been stolen, so the boy wrote, “he really wants one for Christmas so I decided to write this paper for my brother because I love him and he takes very good care of me. My brother is the kindest brother in the whole wide world.”

As the daughter of a Greek immigrant, Valtas Schmidt knows what life is like when money is scarce. She and her sisters lived on second-hand clothes, and Valtas Schmidt started making extra money from the time she turned seven, selling pumpkins at Halloween and helping her father with his snowplowing business at night. They never owned a new bike until the owner of the local bike shop showed up at their home one day and gave them one from an anonymous donor. He explained that the man paid for the shop owner to choose a deserving family each month to receive the bike.

Twenty years later, Valtas Schmidt tracked down her benefactor and the two became friends. He mentored her as she started her first insurance agency—and beyond. When he passed away, Valtas Schmidt decided to honor his memory by continuing his generosity. She started the “Old Bikeman Award”, and last year expanded her giving with the “12 Days of Christmas Bicycle Essay Contest”.

No Excuses? During the Holidays Exercise is Still a Priority

No Excuses… During the Holidays Exercise is Still a Priority

LOA

Fort Lauderdale, FL (PRWEB) December 12, 2011

It’s the season to be jolly and stressed! It’s autopilot time as we get ready for the holidays. There’s gift shopping, parties, holiday feasts and family visits, all triggers for feeling overwhelmed and stressed out. Add to that lack of sleep and exercise, increased alcohol consumption, and time constraints and money issues, and you have a recipe for unhealthy behaviors.

Lady of America Franchise Corporation wants to make sure you enjoy the holiday season while staying on track.

“When your days and time are tight, you must find the time and energy to exercise, no matter what time of day. It may be impossible to make it to the gym or to a class, but there are many other ways to sneak workouts into your day,” said Natalie Brabner, Lady of America Franchise Corporation’s official fitness trainer. “There is no reason you can’t stay on track and enjoy the holiday season without adding pounds!”

Brabner strongly suggests that you make holiday exercises a priority. “During the holidays, schedule your workouts like you would an appointment,” she said. “If you’re finding your days are jammed-packed more than usual, get up early to workout. LOA Fitness for Women and our brands, Ladies Workout Express, Lady of America and Health Clubs of America (HCOA), are generally open early in the morning and close in the evening.”

To make sure you stay active every day, Brabner suggests the following:

o    Always have your gym bag in the car ready to go, just in case your day changes.

o    Can’t get to the gym? Do something different: jump rope, run, dance.

o    Break up your exercises into three 20-minute sessions. One session do upper body exercises, another lower body and the third, circuit training.

o    Instead of meeting friends for coffee or a drink, make it a power walk get-together.

o    Park further away from the door, skip the elevator and escalator and take the stairs, get off the bus or train a stop earlier.

o    When watching TV, do push-ups and sit-ups during the commercials. If you have a treadmill, jump on. Don’t forget to grab the dumbbells and get some bicep and triceps work in.

o    Break your lunch hour up. Eat for half the hour and walk the remainder of the break.

o    Increase the intensity of your workouts.

o    If you live in a warm region and can’t make it to the gym, bike ride, go on a hike, walk or swim.

o    If you live in a cold, wintry climate, try ice skating, jogging, cross-country skiing and skiing.

o    Stuck inside because of a blizzard? Pop in a DVD or check out the exercise programs on cable TV and get moving.

No matter what you do, be sure to fit some activity into your day. Not only will you increase your energy, you’ll bolster your immune system and burn calories.

?Park it for the Market? Results Exceed the Size of Texas

“Park it for the Market” Results Exceed the Size of Texas

AUSTIN, TX (PRWEB) December 19, 2011

“Park it for the Market” has just capped its year-long event encouraging individuals through out the region to “park” their cars at home and take greener trips by walking, biking, telecommuting, carpooling, vanpooling, or taking public transportation. And, in one of the most bikable and walkable cities in the country, that is exactly what hundreds of Austinites did from November 2010 through 2011.

During those 12 months, Austinites eliminated over 98,000 car trips resulting in 2.6 million fewer miles driven, a distance equal to crossing Texas 4,000 times. By taking greener trips, participants saved over $ 500,000, including saving 111,000 gallons of gas as well as their vehicle operating costs. Collectively, over 1,150 tons of emissions were prevented from being released into the atmosphere.

As the event sponsor, Schlosser Development has been recognized for their efforts to spearhead this unique public-private partnership with the NuRide and Austin’s Commute Solutions team. “We are delighted by the win-win efforts of the City of Austin, the Commute Solutions team, local businesses, and event participants to make this a successful event throughout the past 12 months,” said David Vitanza, Director at Schlosser Development.

In addition to the environmental and financial impact of fewer cars on the road, Austinites who signed up for the event at http://www.ParkItForTheMarket.com also earned rewards from dozens of local, regional, and national sponsors. Event participants were also automatically entered in weekly drawings for $ 100 to spend at participating Market District retailers and restaurants, including Book People, The Texas Running Company, Anthropologie, and others.

“Park it for the Market” was managed by NuRide, the nation’s largest rewards program for individuals who take greener trips. According to Rick Steele, founder and CEO of NuRide, “’Park it for the Market has been a powerful event in the Market District to showcase the value Austinites and businesses place on clearing the roads and cleaning the air in Austin. Their efforts and accomplishments are truly Texas-sized!”
